Parachute wants all Canadians to live long lives to the fullest – and that means being physically active to stay healthy, while preventing serious injury. These tips will help you remove hazards from winter sport and physical recreation activities by following safety standards and using the right equipment.

We need to move more to be healthy

  • Only 28 per cent of 5- to 17-year-olds are reaching their recommended physical activity levels as outlined in the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth.
  • Less than half of Canadian adults take at least 7,500 steps a day and only 12 per cent achieved 8 hours or less of sedentary time per day according to the 2021 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Adults. Being sedentary for long periods of time (e.g. sitting while doing activities such as watching TV, working on a computer, travelling in or driving a car) can increase the risk of chronic illness, including depression. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted Canadian’s sedentary behaviours, with 61% of adults reporting spending somewhat or much more time in front of screens.
