TORONTO, Oct. 29, 2013 /CNW/ – The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament (Eglinton-Lawrence), today announced funding to enable the organization Parachute to offer simultaneous interpretation and translation services at the Canadian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference, to be held in Montréal in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross. He made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

« Our Government is a leader in promoting our two official languages across the country, » said Minister Glover. « With this support, we are helping to make this important meeting a truly bilingual event. »

« Our two official languages are an integral part of our country’s history and identity, » said Minister Oliver. « In addition to assisting with the provision of interpretation and translation services at this conference, our Government has helped to facilitate exchanges between the participants. »

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $5,000 to Parachute through the Support for Interpretation and Translation subcomponent of the Promotion of Linguistic Duality component of the Enhancement of Official Languages Program. This subcomponent aims to assist organizations that encourage the participation of Canadians in both official languages at public events and to increase the number of documents available in both English and French.

The Government of Canada unveiled the Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013-2018 last spring. The Roadmap focuses on three pillars that will ensure the vitality of English and French across Canada: education, immigration and communities. As outlined in Economic Action Plan 2013, the Government of Canada is renewing its unprecedented investment in the protection, promotion and celebration of both official languages for another five years.
