Windsor pledges to put ‘safety first’ as it officially becomes a Parachute Designated Safe Community

Windsor, ON, June 23, 2016 – After a year-long process, a local effort to create a community that promotes safety and prevents injuries will officially be announced in Windsor.

A ceremony to formally recognize Windsor’s designation as a ‘Safe Community’ will take place on June 23, 2016 at Caesars Windsor (377 Riverside Drive East.) The ‘State of Safety’ luncheon will feature presentations by Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, Windsor Police Chief Al Frederick, Essex-Windsor EMS Chief Bruce Krauter, Windsor Fire and Rescue Service Chief Bruce Montone and Parachute President and CEO, Louise Logan.

Windsor has successfully completed the Parachute Safe Community Canada ten step process and becomes the 67th ‘Designated Canadian Safe Community.’ The Safe Community project is an initiative of Parachute, a national charity dedicated to preventing injuries and saving lives. Earning a Safe Community designation is not easy, as a municipality must meet certain criteria and show a commitment to working with Parachute to promote safety and injury prevention in its area. Through this Canadian designation, Windsor also becomes part of the Pan Pacific Safe Community Network, which includes Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

“Residents and community leaders in Windsor are to be congratulated for pledging to live and work in a Safe Community,” says Louise Logan, Parachute President and CEO. “This designation reflects Windsor’s long-term commitment to injury prevention and the well- being of their community.”

The first step to Windsor’s Safe Community designation began in July 2015 when a presentation was made to 85 community leaders; an immediate show of support followed, with Mayor Drew Dilkens confirming his leadership toward the safety initiative.

“The designation of Windsor as a Safe Community is a testament to the strong efforts made by local leaders,” says Mayor Drew Dilkens. “Windsor residents will benefit from our newly created ‘Safe Community’ as we work toward making Windsor an even safer city to live, learn, work and play.”

Windsor has demonstrated a strong commitment to safety and injury prevention through key community priorities including falls, motor vehicle collisions and self-harm.
